Pollination Services

Pollination of Oilseed Rape

Studies have shown that oil seed rape yields can be increased by 15%-25%, through increased pollination as a result of honey bees being introduced close the crop during the crops pollination period.

At a time when input costs are high making use of natural pollinators, such as honey bees, to help increase crop yields may be advantageous.

We do not charge for oil seed rape pollination services that are located near our base in East Northants. If you would like to discuss the possibility of having our bees on your land then please get in contact.

Bees on your land all year around

If you have land that you would like to have bees on all year around then we may be able to help by putting a permeant apiary in place.

A relatively small area of land is required in order to set up an apiary (approx 100m2). Places with a bit on natural shelter and  good access for a 4x4 are best (patches of set a side/small woods/spinneys/fenced off corner of a field etc can all work well).

The picture opposite is of one of our apiary sites that was set up in a small track of unused/unproductive land. The apiary now provides pollination of the land owners crops throughout the growing season as different crops come in/out of their pollination period. The bees also help to pollinate the hedgerows, lime/chestnut trees, brambles, clover and wild flowers that are on/nearby the land throughout the year.

We have apiary sites with a number of different land owners who can provide references as to our conduct on their land should this be required.

How It works

Once initial discussions have been complete via phone we like to come and meet you and check that the land/access is suitable. During this visit we will normally agree the number of hives required and the rough locations that they will be sighted.

We will then draw up a pollination contract (the contract will detail basic requirements on both parties, i.e. we will not damage your crops, you will not spray pesticide near our hives without 24h notice etc)

On the agreed date we will then use our commercial trailer/4x4 pickup truck to deliver the hives on your land.

We will then visit the hives on a regular basis to make sure the bees are performing and staying healthy.

When the pollination is complete (or on the agreed date) we return (normally in the evening when all the bees are back in the hives!) to collect the hives and remove them from your land.
